Only Shadows in the Sunshine State

As the 2007-2008 season continues to unravel for the New York Islanders, there isn't much the loyal Islander fan can look forward to. More DP puck-handling gaffs? More ice time for the Bridgeport Islanders? Jon Sim's unlikely return? Like I said, there is not too much to look forward to.

Regarding the play of Rick DiPietro...Where in the beginning of the season DP was a cautious puck-handler, mostly making the right choices behind the net, last night's game was the epitome of the great flaw to DP's goaltending career. What should be his most dependable weapon has once again become his Achilles heel. When DP is making sound decisions, he is communicating with his defenseman, starting the breakout, and keeping the opposing team's forecheck in line. On the contrary, when DP is making mindless decisions, he makes poor passes, he give the opponent's multiple cracks at an empty net, and he disrupts the flow of his team's defensive game. When DP sits back in his goal and does the simple thing like stopping the puck, he can be one of the most effective goaltenders in the NHL. But the DP of last night looked like he belonged back in the minor leagues.

Now in all fairness to DP, he is probably playing with an ongoing injury--probably whatever he worsened during the NHL all-star skills competition. That, in addition to playing behind one of the worst teams in the NHL, would certainly frustrate DP and make him want to leave his crease to play the puck more. Some are now willing to question DP's 15 year contract based on what has transpired in a few week interval. However, I am not one of those persons.

DP has proved to me that he is more than capable of leading this team to a successful season. The first half of this season (prior to all the defensive injury woes, his own injury, and when the Isles were still competitive), DP was in top form. I don't think it's fair to quit on the franchise player when every other player on the Isles has failed to adequately support him. That said, DP still needs to be tamed and the over-handling of the puck did not serve the Isles well last night.

Regarding the Isles' management...This is not going to be the type of season where we can question specific in-game decisions and certain missed chances that led to our place in the standings. However, this is the type of season where we must question those in charge and the overall strategy they have in place to bring the Stanley Cup back to Long Island. Garth Snow and Ted Nolan, two men who were highly regarded for the job they did last season, have taken enormous steps backwards over the course of a single season. Ted Nolan has developed an unwillingness to change--his line combinations, his apportionment of ice time, his power play strategy--are just a few examples of a stubborn coach letting his ego override what's best for his team. For example, Ted Nolan tells us that Mike Comrie is a top-line player and that Trent Hunter is a tremendous asset and that they should receive the big minutes. Yet when Comrie/Hunter fail, not only does Nolan refuse to admit he was mistaken, but he also refuses to give those minutes to more deserving players. Over the last 13 games, the Isles' PP is 4 for its last 55, or a measly 7%. During that stretch, and we have not seen or heard of any change on the PP strategy or the PP personnel. And what does Snow do in response to all of this? He refuses to fire Isles' PP coach Gallant and rewards Comrie and Hunter with new contracts.

I hope Garth Snow has learned a lesson this season. This nonsense notion that a team of "Ted Nolan players" will prevail over the more skilled teams has no merit. A coal miner who works all day will never have the IQ to design a space satellite. Along those lines, a team of hard-working unskilled hockey players will never have the ability to compete in the NHL. Moreover, this group has gone through numerous stretches of lazy inattentive play, which is the opposite of a "Nolan player." At this point in the season, we need to see more of guys like Comeau, Tambellini, Walter, and Colliton. They are more skilled than the Hilberts, Hunters and Parks on the current team. Yes, there are going to be periods of spotty play as these kids better learn the game, but they have more future upside than every last member of the Isles forward unit. In addition, I wouldn't bring Okposo up into this mess either and spoil his NHL debut on a gutless team that has lost interest in the current season.

Regarding the defensemen...There is merit to the idea that the Isles season has unfolded partially due to the loss of so many defensemen. Currently, Campoli is out for the year, Sutton is on the shelf for weeks, and Gervais, Martinek, and Witt are and have been banged up. Aaron Johnson is not a capable NHL defenseman nor is Rob Davison or Bryan Berard. Next year I hope Snow adds one major defenseman along the lines of a Wade Redden. A strong UFA in addition to Witt, Martinek, Sutton, Campoli, Gervais, and Meyer not only is sufficient, but is large enough to allow the Isles to move a Campoli/Gervais for some offensive help.

Regarding the offense...The Isles should have parted with the likes of Satan and Fedotenko. While they may not have fetched high round picks, any return would be more helpful to the Isles future than those players' services this season. This again goes towards Snow's inability to characterize and judge the value in the market. He made low-ball offers to the top UFAs last season, and I'm sure he low-balled offers at the trading deadline a few weeks ago. We will know soon whether Snow learned from his lesson.

All in all, the Isles need to overhaul the strategy we see on the ice. We need newer younger players, who play an uptempo style with lots of scoring chances. The leftover aging vets routine has put Isles fans to sleep over the course of a 82 game season. Presently, I find it extremely hard to sit through an entire Isles game, mostly because the Isles try to put the other teams to sleep in hopes of winning games 1-0, 2-1, etc. If that method were working, I'm sure I would have less of a problem with it. But that method can't possibly work when we have no one capable of creating scoring chances on a consistent basis and no one willing to pay the price to collect the unskilled goal. Out of all the Isles forwards coming into this season (Guerin, Comrie, Hunter, Vasicek, Tank, Hilbert, Park, Silinger) there isn't one player I would miss if they were not to return next season. We will however be stuck with Guerin, Comrie, Park, and Silinger, but if Snow can replace the others with some faster younger players, the Isles just might be watchable next season. And it doesn't hurt also that we are creeping slowly toward solidifying a spot in the bottom-5 of the league and a crack at the first overall pick.

Turn out the lights, the party's over.

Nolan was making excuses tonight saying he didn't know if he was coach the Sound Tigers or the Islanders. Maybe that 2 for 46 PP confused him.

What is painfully obvious and disturbing to me, is that DP has quit on this team.
For a guy that is as competitive as DP, it has to maddening to go out there and lose as many games as he has. He looks like he is sick to death of playing with inferior players. Perhaps Brendan Witt is in DP's class of player but that's about it. All the rest are more than a cut below.

DP looks frustrated, mentally beat and totally out of it. If it is a physical ailment, then it is time to sit him down and treat whatever is wrong. There is no sense pushing him now that the season is lost.

However, if it is not physical, then Snow and Nolan have a real problem on their hands
Players who are so much better than their team mates can grow resentful of them very quickly when the team loses.

I hope I am wrong, but I don't think so. Ithink DP is tired of losing and tired of playinmg with a bad team. Thoughts?.....Bill

I was at the game, and I can't remember seeing a worse one. Ever.

Intersting to hear Nolan's post-game comments re: the Sound Tigers. Maybe he should play them more often...he put Walter out there on the kid line PP, and got a goal w/i 5 seconds. hmmmm... Walter might be better than Park & Hilbert? No way..

I dont think DP quit here. And I don't think he's wishing he were somewhere else- and if he is I don't feel bad for him. He made his own bed by signing a contract rendering him all but untradeable, so he must have realized that he's sticking with this team through thick & thin.

The entire team is frustrated; watching player reactions after every goal was quite telling. People were clearly blaming each other, and no one person was at fault- they all were, including DP.

I honestly think we'll only see one more year of Nolan. If we don't get past the 1st round next year, I think he'll be gone. Snow's future lies with this man, and while he may like the guy, I don't think Snow is willing to risk his GM career before he gets a chance to show what he can do.

BTW, did anyone else know Steve Stirling is the coach for Tampa's minor league team? That man was a hockey guru! (in comparison...)

I just noticed an intersting stat, confirming a lot of what we've been speaking about these past weeks.

Montreal has the league lead for goals scored (227), we are in the bottom 3 with 174...a difference of 53.

Thats it. 53 extra goals throughout the year would have us sitting in the league lead. I know I know, its not sound logic at all, but lets just go with that for a second.

53 goals were scored by Alexander Ovechkin by himself this year. If we pay him whatever is left up to our salary cap for his goals, we should be all set, right?

Or, had Guerin, Satan, Comrie, Sillinger, Hunter, and Tank all come through this year, we probably would have gotten 53 extra goals, right?

Or, if we had McCabe (or some other PP QB), our crappy PP would have scored at least some of those 53 extra goals, right?

My point is that while we limp out of 2008, the parity in this league is a lot more than I think we sometimes realize. Any given team appears only a few players away from making a deep playoff run...

Come offseason, I'm real intersted to see how Snow handles this. He can't sit on his haunches and allow teams to snatch the good players from under his nose. He tried with "nolan type" players, but we havn't seen a Nolan player in weeks- it doesn't work. Snow needs to make an aggressive move for a top offensive talent, and build a strong PP squad. We do have good defense, as long as they can stay healthly, but could use a stalwart or two.

We'll be getting a good pick this year, and hopefully along with KO & the other kids, we'll have a solid core for the next few years.

Either way, its make or break time for Snolang. Sitting back another few years will simply delay the Lighthouse project, and I worry what will happen then. Its now or never...unfortuantly

I didn't watch the game and haven't watched the last 4-5 games. But, this is pretty much what happens when 5 out of the 11 forwards are kids.

Kids: -10
Rest of team: -4

They are going to be bad again next year. The only difference will be that Comeau, Neilsen and maybe Tambellini, Walter and/or Colliton will all be on the team for the whole year. They won't turn the corner until the 2009-10 season, when all of the above and Okposo, Joensuu and maybe Figren, Marcinko and whoever their first round pick from this year's draft are ready for full time NHL duty.

Anonymous said...

SHINK.........That's a very misleading stat showing the kids at -10.

Let's look at the Isles top line last night:
Comrie -19
Guerrin -15
Satan -7

The "Kid" line of
Tambellini -8
Comeau +2
Colliton 0

That makes our first line a whopping -41 for the season. If you include Hilbert (+2)instead of Satan you still end up with -32.

The Kid line is -6 and they do not get PP time to pad their stats.

Let's place the blame where it belongs........Bill

shinkdew said...

How does playing on the PP pad their +/-? It's not misleading at all. They were -10 last night, the rest of the team was -4. The kids were directly responsible for three of the goals.

Candyman said...

I think last night's game didn't bode well for the Kids b/c Comeau was experimented with as a forward. Overall over the course of the season, the Comries and Guerins have been horrendous in their own zone while rarely contributing offensively.

shinkdew said...

I agree that playing out of position would cause problems.

If you think Comrie and Guerin's +/- is bad, Tambellini's projects to -27 over a full season.

What does everyone think about Nolan calling out DiPietro on his puck handling? I really haven't watched any Islanders games lately, so I have no idea if he is over-handling the puck or not. Judging from this blog and others, he appears to be. I'm kind of surprised he did it, given what happened in Buffalo after he called out Hasek.

Nyisles82 said...

To answer that question, I'm going to assume DP has been reading this blog and agrees with our call for a PP QB. Thats great, except he appears to want to be the QB himself...in his goalie pads.

I do think he is injured, but I don't think he's losing focus or anything like that. I just think he's trying to do too much, and has been getting frustrated with the team that is on the ice. He's been hung out to dry a whole lot (e.g. short handed goals), so he's doing what any elite player would do- try to help. Except he's not in a position to help, since he's supposed to be stopping pucks, not playing them.

Nolan should call him out, and should bench him. I don't care who you are, or how long your contract is, you need to respect the coach. If Nolan folds here, consider that the end of him.

Respect for one another is critical for any team to get through the long season, and if the players start losing respect for the coach, it's all over...

Candyman said...

nyisles,

There's a huge difference and an important difference between calling out your goalie in the locker room (and perhaps benching him) and calling out your goalie to the whole world after a tough game.

shinkdew said...

I was under the assumption based on Nolan's comments that they've told DiPietro numerous times in private to tone it down. That said, last night was probably the wrong time, given it was statistically one his worst starts as an Islander.

Matthew Spiller, Tim Jackman and Steve Regier are in the line up tonight. Tank and Hilbert are out and Witt is probably done for the season. Colliton was sent back to Bridgeport.

Candyman said...

Another game, another step closer towards a shot at the #1 pick.

For the first time all season, I didn't bother to watch the game tonight. I am tired of seeing the same things happen night after night. It's like watching reruns of the Honeymooners. You know what's going to happen by heart.

Snow has a lot of work to do this offseason. This team is full of holes and I personally don't see any outstanding free agents that fit the bill here. I am sick of seeing the Islanders attempt to fit a square peg into a round hole.
Comrie and Guerrin are just not first line players. In fact, there are no first line players on this team. Many of us predicted that this season was lost at the beginning of the year. It was a wasted year because Snow could have used this year to give the kids significant ice time and really sort out just what he had to work with here. Instead, he patchworked a bunch of 3 rd and 4 th liners into another losing season without finding out if any of the B'Port player have futures here. A large step backwards.

As for DP, I really beleive that he has just lost it with losing. Once he gave up that first goal the game was over. I don't think that any goalie can withstand that kind of pressure for an entire season. He has taken a serious hit to his confidence. This is more trouble than most of you guys think that it is. He is definatley
brooding and withdrawn and that is not a good thing. The Islanders have to be very careful with this.
I do not beleive that he is physically injured. I think that he is regretting signing here long term.
DP see's Brodeur and Lundquist surrounded by some excellent players and has to be wondering why
he is playing his heart out for bunch of stiffs who never win.

And then there is the genius Nolan who steadfastly refused to see the writing on the wall. The Islanders will never go anywhere with him as coach. Give me Bryan Trottier and the kids next year and let's see what he can do.
Nolan has proven that he is no better than Sterling or any of the other losing coaches that have paraded through the Coliseum.
His time has passed.

I still like Washington and will root for the Caps to make it into the playoffs. At least they are exciting to watch.....Bill

A good excerpt from B.D. Gallof's blog...

"We've all seen Nolan's love of vets, especially those who simply do not seem to have the ability to create much in terms of stats. That simply has not worked with a squalid goals-for and the slides below the playoff watermark. We've also seen many issues he has had with some youth. Nilsson seemed not to get much a shot before they launched him to EDM. Tambs was in the same boat, seemingly to get less than 10 minutes, and sent down every time he made a mistake. Rookies...make mistakes. Somewhere along the line, as much as you want them to adopt some of the basics, you also need to commit to them. As Nolan did the year before with Gervais and even Campoli. Snow might be making Nolan commit a bit early. But that's his job, thus Nolan's job to deal with it.

Somewhere along the line, perhaps there is/was a split between Snow and Nolan's view of where the future is/lies. Or simply Nolan's desire to have certain attributes and style to play for his team. Forcing those youth to adopt it or learn it with some tough love. Yet, the grinders have failed, and the youth is about the only thing making it worth watching these days. So, who is really right? And who is to blame with the current personnel that DID fail? We all recall the Isles reports of Nolan and Snow working together to get the current guys onboard back over the summer. So, how much could these two be apart? They're clearly both to blame in part to what has gone on."

shinkdew said...

Interesting that Chris Pronger (who has a history of being disciplined) stomped on Ryan Klesler's calf last night, and not only didn't get a penalty, but the NHL says he will not be suspended.

Anonymous said...

As far as I am concerned, Snow can leave tonight and take Nolan with him.
Snow has done a miserable job of assembling a team and Nolan has done an even worse job with the players that he does have.
This has been a wasted season that has put the team back five years. There are no building blocks here. There are no stars waiting in the wings. There are only 3 rd and 4 th line players, by the dozens, all vying for the same 6 spots on the roster.
We still have Bates.
We still have Sillinger.
We still have Sim.
We have Park for 2 more years.
We have Hilbert for another year.
We have Hunter for 5 more years.

So where does that leave Neilsen, Tambs, Comeau, Colliton, Walter and anyone else in Bridgeport that deserves a shot?

Now we have Guerrin and Comrie as second liners and NO FIRST LINE at all.

Satan, Tank, and Joe V will all move along with no return for any of them.

The defense has one number one player (Witt) three number 4 's
(Martinek, Sutton, Campoli), a 5 (Gervais) and a seemingly endless supply of 7 th D-men (Davison, Berrard, Johnson, FMV, Fata, etc)

Oh, And no one who can run a Power Play.

Ask yourself if this franchise is better today than it was two years ago before Snow and Nolan took over?..........Bill

shinkdew said...

Yes, it's a lot better franchise.

Two years ago, they had no prospects that were anywhere near ready for the NHL. They how have 6 prospects, 7 - if you include Okposo. That doesn't count the first round pick from this season which would make 8.

Two years ago, their defense consisted of Zhitnik, Niinimaa, Martinek, Campoli, Lukowich and Sopel. The current crop of Witt, Sutton, Martinek, Campoli, Gervais and Berard are better defensively. They are also much deeper than two years ago. The PP QB was better two years ago but Campoli will eventually grow into a PP QB.

On offense they may be a little worse, but the future is far brighter with the prospects that are ready now, than two years ago.

DiPietro is better now than two years ago.

Candyman said...

Well the recent positives you mentioned have nothing to do with Snow and Nolan. The prospects were drafted by the Milbury regime and DP is better simply b/c he is older. The top defenseman Witt, Martinek, Campoli, Gervais were not the product of Snolan either. (Witt was signed by Smith I believe?)

Nolan needs to accept that a team of aging vets is no way to build a team. It was a silly idea this season to even attempt to make a run with this group. We should have sold off all of our useless vets for prospects/picks. Instead we signed Hunter to an outrageous 5 year contract and are stuck with the dynamic duo of Comrie/Guerin for another season. Like Bill said, we also have Park, Hilbert, Silinger, Sim, etc. 4th liners everywhere signed through next season.

Shink do you see anything different on the horizon for next season?

shinkdew said...

What you say is true, but the franchise is still better than it was two years ago. Just because those players are signed, doesn't mean they will be here next season. I think Park and Sim will be back. I wouldn't be surprised if Sillinger is not able to come back from that injury. Bates' career is basically over. He may come back, but he will be injured again.

Yes, I do think things will be different next season. Instead of half a season, Comeau, Nielsen, Tambellini will all be on the team for the full season. Okposo, Colliton and Walter could also be on team.

I agree with you on Hunter. I along with you said he was easily replaceable. I think Bill was the only poster saying he was a top 6 forward who should be signed long-term.

Nyisles82 said...

"The prospects were drafted by the Milbury regime and DP is better simply b/c he is older. The top defenseman Witt, Martinek, Campoli, Gervais were not the product of Snolan either. (Witt was signed by Smith I believe?)"

Snow has not had a chance to draft, so its entirely unfair to judge/compare him there.

Its clear he hasn't made the signings needed to make the Islanders a competitive hockey club, but he's also been affected by the legacy left to him. Who would want to sign as a FA to this club? Drury, Gomez, Smyth, Jovo, Karyia etc etc...all of them decided elsewhere NOT because of Snow, Nolan, or money. They signed elsewhere because of the legacy the Islanders have from the last 10 years.

"It was a silly idea this season to even attempt to make a run with this group."

How was it a silly idea at all when we were sitting in 7th/8th place, and only 6 points out of FIRST in the east?

Hindsight is 20/20 folks...we were right with the best only a few weeks ago. Until DP got injured, Witt/Sutton/Camps/Gervais got injured (4/7 top defensemen). While I still don't think he should have held on to the vets, I also don't think it was silly to believe we could make it. Had we kept our D healthy, I guarantee Tampa would not have put 8 up against us, and I'd wager we would have stayed right there with philly in 8th place.

At least now we have a SHOT at the #1 pick. It happened in 2000 (we jumped from the the 25th team to the 1st overall pick), so why not again?

Could we trade that for Vinny L? Malkin?

shinkdew said...

I was thinking about whether they should make an offer to Malkin after next season. They have a lot of draft picks for this year's and next year's draft. Signing Malkin to a "max" deal would cost them 4 1st round picks, I think beginning in 2011. If they have a top 3 pick in this year's draft and next year's draft. I think I would give serious consideration to signing Malkin and giving up the four picks. I think Pittsburgh would be crazy to even let it get that far, but they may not have the cap space.

Video of Pronger stomping on Kessler.

Wow. I'm not sure what else to say...how does this NOT get 30 games? Pronger has been suspended previously just as many times as Simon had, and got nothing for this?? Stick swinging incident aside, Pronger's elbows and vicious hits demonstrate a clear intent to injure- he's a menace to other's health.

No wonder hockey isn't getting any new fans...this is just embarrassing.

Nyisles82 said...

Do you guys think Malkin is a player to build a team around?

I'm up for giving 4 1st rounders for a guy you can build around. However, I'm not sure about Malkin. He sometimes strikes me as another Yashin..big and clearly able to score when he wants to, yet quiet and reserved. Yashin would have been perfect on this (or any) team had he not signed a team crippling 10 year deal, or been thrust into the spotlight and made captain. Malkin is playing 2nd fiddle to Crosby, who is clearly the captain and leader of that team. If Malkin wants to/has to disappear for a game, the focus is not on him- Crosby's name will still be on the scorers sheet.

If Malkin came over here (or any team) with the pressure that 4 first round picks cause, I worry about that. If we were able to sign another true scorer and leader (a la Spezza, Shanahan, etc), I'm all for making the play for a Malkin/Hossa type player.

I think there are some people not fit for leadership roles, and Malkin might be one of them...

Can't you just hear the jeers from the pundits if we were to make that offer though? 4 1st round picks for another Yashin!

Nyisles82 said...

One more thing- the rumor is that this Stamkos guy is another "Crosby" type leader (and hopefully player). If we nab him, we SHOULD make the play for Malkin. Give them both 10 year Mike Richards deals while they're young, and build around them.

What really would be crazy (akin to last season's miracle run to get in the playoffs) is if LA somehow gets 10 pts out of their next 10 games. And, of course, we get 0... i can dream, right?

SHINK.....Hunter is right where he should be. He is third on the team in points and tied for first in assists. How much better has his production been since he teamed up with J Vas and Tank? Most of the year he was stuck with Sillinger and Hilbert which killed his production. At an average of 2 million for 5 years, Hunter is a bargin. If he gets to play with some real hockey players next year he will top 50 points.

As for your assertion that all the kids will get a roster spot next year, I would love to see that in writing. Quite a few of Nolans boys will have to be cut loose to make room for the likes of the kids. I'll beleive it when I see it. Besides, wasn't it you who resisted the kids all year based on the assumption that no fans would come out to watch the "Bridgeport Islanders"?

Secondly, my point about Tambellini never getting PP time means that he did not have a chance to get an easier "+" because you do earn a "+" on a PP goal. Most teams (except the Islanders) score PP goals and the PP players build up stats based on that. It is simply a hockey fact.

I don't see how you can think that this team is improved over last year or two years ago. Last years team had Blake, Smyth, Yashin and Poti who were all at one time NHL All Stars. Say what you will but Blake had 40 goals. This years leader will have half of that. Yashin had a point per game average. No one on this team will be close to that. Smyth was a rental, but his numbers top anyone who is here now. And Poti was a true PP QB who knew how to run a PP.
Is there a SINGLE player here in any of their class now?
The answer is obvious.
You call that progress?

As for Malkin, I would sign him in a second. He proved his worth when Crosby was injured and will be a star in this league for the next dozen years. Long after we have forgotten any number one picks.

Snow is probably not astute enough to go after Malkin, but he should be his number one priority if he is indeed an RFA.....BILL

Candyman said...

I'm pretty positive you don't get a "+" for a PP goal. But I agree with the rest of your post.

Nyisles82 said...

I agree w/ Bill about Hunter.

His play, with V-cek & Tank, improved dramatically. IF (once again...) he drives the net some more, that line would be quite formidable. Which is why I'd love to see at least V-cek resigned for the next few years...and replace Tank with Sim.

shinkdew said...

Why would quite a few of Nolan's boys have to leave? Satan, Tank and Vasicek open three spots right off the bat. Bates and Sillinger could also open another two spots. Snow said at the trade deadline during his interview with Howie and Jaffe that Comeau, Tambellini and Neilsen would all have roster spots next year.

You don't get a "+" for PP goals. It's a simple hockey fact.

Smyth has never made an All Star team. He has been injured for most of this season, and has 33 points, which would be tied for 5th on the Islanders.

Poti is a PP QB? He has 8 PP assists, and no goals this season. The Islanders have two defenseman that have more than that, Berard and Campoli.

Blake may have had 40 goals last year, but his career high before that was 28. He has 13 goals this year, which is 5 more than Hilbert. Had he not wanted an outrageous contract, he'd still be in with the Islanders.

Yashin was a cancer in the locker room, overpaid and so coveted by the rest of the league that he had to sign in Russia because nobody wanted him.

Candyman said...

Shink.

So what I think we are all getting at and what I was alluding to earlier was how do you expect the lineup to develop for next season. Cause it seems to me that your ready to bring a majority of this same team back. Do you honestly feel that this group is just a few puzzle pieces away from contending? That's fair if you do and I would like to see your plan. But if you don't, this group must be disbanded AQAP.

Let's take a look....

Forwards to return include Guerin, Comrie, Hunter, Silinger, Sim, Hilbert, Park, Bergenheim, Bates, Tambellini, Comeau, Nielson. So that's 12 forwards and 4 lines right there.

If we bring back a Vasicek like you said over Bates who is probably done, well this is the same exact team that could not score this season. If Silinger is done, then we'll add another aging vet to fill his shoes. But the point is this group should not remain together.

Looking at the defensemen, Witt, Martinek, Sutton, Campoli, Gervai, Meyer IV, AJ, & Davison are all signed through next season. There it is--that's our whole group--the same one as this season.

And this is my fear--that we will see an all too similar team next season as the one we saw this season.

So Shink or anyone please chime in. What does your 08/09 projected lineup look like? Use terms like "UFA stud defenseman" or "UFA 1st line winger" if need be.

Nyisles82 said...

Didn't we do this a few weeks/months ago? :)

Guerin-Comrie-Ryder
Bergy-Okposo (or Neilsen if KO isn't ready)-Riberio
V-check-Hunter-Sim
Tamby-Nielsen/Walter-Comeau

JM Liles- Mark Streit (or obviously Campbell if possible...)
Witt-Martinek
Gervais-Sutton
Campoli

Dubie

Everyone else should be traded/retire/will leave anyway. We could get a decent return on Park, and package him with someone like Hilbert & FMV from a team looking to "dump" salary. Or needing 1 or 2 speedy PKers and a decent defenseman.

Of course, I'd love to also see the 4th line play some more!

shinkdew said...

The team is still going to struggle to score next season. Next season is going to be worse than this season unless they can sign Hossa or make a trade for a top line player. The kids will be expected to contribute more. This is what I have by position.

C: Comrie, Neilsen, Sillinger, Colliton
LW: Tambellini, Bergenheim, Sim, Park
RW: Guerin, Comeau, Hunter, Okposo

D: UFA, Witt, Martinek, Sutton, Campoli, Gervais, Meyer, Johnson

Healthy scratches: Hilbert, Bates

In the event that Sillinger can't play, you call up Walter, move Park to C or if it's early enough in the summer, sign a UFA. Davison is a UFA after this season. Johnson is an RFA and if they don't sign him, I'd expect Fata to take his spot.

Nyisles82 said...

Oh & I'd make a push for Dan Boyle as well in the off season...Tampa needs to dump salary.

shinkdew said...

Tampa doesn't need to dump salary, they just dumped almost $8m on Dallas. They have $35m in salary going into next season, the Islanders have almost $32m.

And Ribeiro is signed with Dallas through 2013. I also don't understand the longing for Liles among Islander fans. His PP stats are about the same as Berard's and he's played 20 more games than Berard.

Nyisles82 said...

Yes, but Tampa, if they tried to resign Boyle, would have once again most of their salary tied up in 3 players. Thats their problem..they have 3 crippling contracts in a weak hockey market.

You're right about Ribriero- I must have been looking at an out-of-date UFA list.

I'd also suggest looking @ Malik, Redden, Norstrom, Rozsival, and Mara. All of them are solid D men, and play on teams that can't afford to add much more salary.

shinkdew said...

They already signed Boyle before the trade deadline.

Nyisles82 said...

right...so apparently not many people have updated their lists...

SHINK'S LINEUP
C: Comrie, Neilsen, Sillinger, Colliton
LW: Tambellini, Bergenheim, Sim, Park
RW: Guerin, Comeau, Hunter, Okposo

D: UFA, Witt, Martinek, Sutton, Campoli, Gervais, Meyer, Johnson

Healthy scratches: Hilbert, Bates

Who QB's the PP?

When was the last time Hilbert was scratched in favor of any of the kids by Nolan?

Who is your first line?

Who scores more than 20 goals?

That line up scares no one and finishes 13 th or 14 th in the Eastern Conf. It is just as bad as what we have now.

First line: UFA, UFA, Comeau
Second line: Comrie, Guerrin, Okposo
Third Line: Tambellini, Bergy, Neilsen
Fourth line Hunter, Park, Colliton
or Sim
Silinger--buy out or trade.
Hilbert---B'port or scratch
Bates---buy out or trade

Defense:
UFA PP QB, UFA puck mover
Martinek-Witt
Campoli-Gervais
FMV spare part
Johnson--B'Port
Davsison--B'port
Berrard--Goodbye!

This team needs to spend MONEY to get at least 2 front line players and a PP QB and a puck moving Dman.

What happened to the 10 million in Cap Space this year?

Ryan Smyth was on the 2007 NHL All Star team that played in Dallas as per HHL.COM. He wore number 93 instead of 94 which went to Yannick Perrault.

How many PP assists did Poti have last years with the Islanders?

Blake and Yashin may have been good moves to get rid of, but you dont cut loose that many goals without having someone to take their place. That is poor planning on Snow's part and that is why we are headed for an early summer....Bill

shinkdew said...

Bill you must have missed the part were I said they were going to be worse next year. Campoli will be the PP QB. Who cares how many PP assists Poti had last year?

I guess you didn't get the memo that the Islanders are rebuilding. I really hope you don't think they are going to spend to the cap, because they are not. The payroll will probably be about the same as this year or lower.

Candyman said...

Shink,

The lineup you offered does not seem like an attempt to rebuild--it seems like an attempt at another mediocre run for the 8th spot with the same lineup as this year with kids getting no time.

The kids need to see big minutes--Comeau needs to be on the first line, Tambellini and Bergenheim need big minutes, and Park/Hunter/Hilbert need to have minimal roles if this is truly going to be a rebuilding year. I actually love Bill's projected lineup because it offers a chance to rebuild while giving us a chance to compete.

shinkdew said...

How would the kids get the no time? What are they going to do with Satan, Tank and Vasicek's minutes?

The only the problem with Bill's line up is not even close to being feasible. How are they going to get two top line players in free agency? And two top defenseman? The last time I checked Hossa was the only top line player. I also think it's funny, in his earlier post he claimed Hunter would score over 50 points next season, but now he's got him on the 4th line. I'm pretty confident Hunter would have no chance of scoring 50 points playing on the 4th line.

You guys are in serious denial if you think the Islanders are going to land four top tier free agents. They'll be luck to get one, and I'm not very confident about that happening.

Anonymous said...

Shink, A PPQB and a puck moving defensmen will not break the bank here . First off they will be shedding Satan, and Tank's salaries which should be more than enough to bring in both of these with a few million to spare.

With the 10 million saved this year and the amount of salary cut from this roster, Snow should have about 12 million to spend on 2 first line players. Not every first line player is named Hossa. There are several good RFA's that will become available due to the cap.

Hunter has 38 points right now. With 10 games left he will probably make it to around 44 or 45Hunter is a versitaile player who could easily play on the second, third or fourth lines sepending on injuries and coaches decisions.
I do not see it as impossible for him to improve 5 or 6 points next year if he plays with better than the likes of Hilbert and Sillinger.

And Shink, No I didn't get any memo from Snow or the Islanders. I guess the rest of us are not as well connected as you are.
Can you reprint it here for us regular fans who are so far out of the loop.........Bill

shinkdew said...

Can you name any of these top line RFA's that are going to be available? Not to mention these RFA's are going to cost the Islanders 4 1st round picks. So I don't see Snow making any offers to the RFAs.

How is Hunter going to be playing with players better than Hilbert and Sillinger on the 4th line?

shinkdew said...

The only two UFA PP QB's are Campbell and Redden, and both of them are going to cost $6m+. So that pretty much takes care of the money they will save with Satan and Tank.

Nyisles82 said...

Not sure about you guys, but I've been following this Pronger situation pretty closely. Apparently, the league is re-opening their "investigation" into the alleged stomp.

I know we all despised Simon for his lack of production and apparent lack of appreciation for getting a 2nd (or was that 8th...) chance in the league. However, to me, this is more of the same things we spoke about last year, right around this time.

This is more than comparing Pronger vs. Simon...this is comparing Anaheim vs. the NYI, and how the Isles get zero respect from the rest of the league. Two completely different franchises.

Anaheim has built a repeat contender team, won a cup, has extremely marketable stars, has a coach & GM that are well liked around the league, and is located in an area that the NHL would like to build its appeal.

The Islanders are basically the opposite of all that. Horrible results the last 15 years, hasn't won a cup in 25, no marketable stars (not even DP...yet), Coach & GM are ridiculed around the league, and is located right next to the NHL's biggest gold mine..the NY Rangers.

We were complaining about the ref's making biased calls against the Isles all of last year, but to me, this is a bigger and more serious bias against our franchise. During games, refs have micro seconds to make a call; the Pronger non-call was made after "careful" review and all the necessary time.

Yet we all saw what happened...quickly the NHL tried to brush this under the carpet, and ensure their big star on an appealing team in a great market gets to play in the playoffs. Simon was dispensable, and they tried to make an example of him. Well clearly the example was that stars get to do what they want, while the scrubs have to face the music for doing the same.

Simon's 30 games was the right call; Pronger should be out for at least 20. If he's not, this is a disgrace to the league. And once again, the Islanders are the leagues whipping boy, on & off the ice.

Ok, I'll end this rant: its Miller time...

SHINK
Satan makes 4.5 million.
Tank makes 2.9 million.
That's 7.4 million. NOT 6 as you incorrectly stated.

If Snow can't find a PP QB and a puck moving D man for 7.4 million or there about, then he is in the wrong business.
A puck mover is not a superstar or even an all star. Just someone who can carry the puck or start the rush.
A PP QB may be a bit more difficult
to find but I do not know every player in the NHL. Snow should.

Only Witt makes more than 1 million among all the Isles D men.

With the 7.4 million saved by cutting Satan and Tank loose and the 10 million cap space they have the Islanders are in a position
to go after some UFA's and RFA's.

Campbell will get his price and so will Redden, although his stock has dropped.

This off season will tell a lot about the Isles committment to winning. The cap will rise and the Isles will have close to 20 million to spend.
That's 5 each million for 4 players

The Isles could bust the bank on Malkin but knowing Snow he won't.

I'll take a look at the UFA and RFA list over the next few days and see if any players jump out.
I know JM Liles is high on my wish list. Shink, you may compare him to Campoli but the rest of the NHL thinks a bit more highly of him.
I would love to see him in an Isles uniform next year.

There are several other solid, first line players who may not be household names but who would fit the bill here. Snow will have to pay more, but the team as built now is not a playoff team.

He needs to get creative and do some serious scouting of who may be available............Bill

Anonymous said...

Whooops forgot Sutton who makes more than 1 million. Campoli, Martinek, Gervais, Meyer, Davision, Johnson and Berrard do not......Bill

Candyman said...

And here lies the great conundrum this offseason...can we pay the UFAs to come play for us?

Even though some free agents spurned us last summer when we gave them more money, most of that was not for significant money...(Smyth $1 million over 5 years aka $200k a year)...

We will most likely have to offer much more than other teams and that is something Wang/Snow better be willing to do...we can't go into the offseason lowballing the top UFAs or they will be turned off and will likely sign elsewhere...

Redden should be a fair target and I'm sure the Isles might reopen talks on McCabe...the Isles need some 1st line talent and the only way to do so might be via trades...

As for the current season, I am currently rooting for LA, TB, ATL, etc. to keep up their solid play. If the Isles can grab a stud in the first round we will be well on our way...

shinkdew said...

Martinek will be making $1.5m next season too. I suspect Gervais will be given a similar deal as Campoli.

It would be great if the Islanders could make those signings, but I don't see it happening. The only team off the top of my head that really doesn't have cap room is Anaheim, and Niedermeyer retiring would solve that problem. The Islanders will have to overpay to sign Hossa, Redden or Campbell. I think signing Liles is possible. Streit is another possibility.

What do you think about making a deal for Marleau? His play has picked up recently. San Jose would probably move him for a reasonable price. Marleau has to be a better option than Comrie as a #1 center. He's under contract for two more seasons, and his cap hit is reasonable at $4.1m.

Anonymous said...

Shink...Marleau is a great idea. If the Isles can grab him before his NTC kicks in they should jump on it. He is a true first line player and would make the whole team better.

What is the consensus on Stamkos? Is he a player that can change a team into a contender like Crosby, Malkin or Ovetchkin or is he a cut below like Gaborik, Nash or Thorton was with the Bruins?

If the Isles can fill that star type player role with Stamkos then that would leave that much more cash to spend on a finisher and a PP QB.

What are the alternatives if they can't get Stamkos? Suppose they pick in the top 5 but not number one.

Who is on the wish list here?...Bill

Anonymous said...

As for Pronger....once again Colin Campbell proves what a buffoon he is and just what a Mickey Mouse league the NHL is. Where is Bettman on this?
Another disgrace.
Another black eye for hockey.
Another double standard.

And the NHL wonders why people think that hockey is all about fighting and that Slapshot is a true picture of what the NHL is.

Disgusting..........Bill

shinkdew said...

I agree about Pronger, I'd love to know the reasoning behind the NHL's decision.

This is the top five according to ISS:

1. Steve Stamkos - C
2. Nikita Filatov - LW
3. Drew Doughty - RD
4. Cody Hodgson - C
5. Alex Pietrangelo - RD

I believe Stamkos is considered to be about a half step down from Crosby. He's about the same size, and the same kind of player, just slightly less skilled. I think teams may pass on Filatov due to the lack of transfer agreement with Russia. Doughty is supposed to be a stud offensive defenseman and PP QB. He was ranked #2 but has dropped. Pietrangelo is another offensive defenseman. He was #3 but has dropped too.

I'm hoping the Islanders pick either #1 or #2 and take either Stamkos or Doughty.

TSN and hockeysfuture.com has profiles of most of the draft picks for this year's draft.

I only watched the first two periods last night but i was surprised by what I saw......SPEED.
Yes, the Islanders actually generated some speed and pretty much kept up with the Canadiens for two pereiods.

It was amazing to me, to see the difference in the game when the Isles kids had the puck and when Guerrin, Berrard or Hunter had control. The kids flung the puck all over the ice, while Guerrin stopped, stood still and waited for a Montreal player to get right on top of him. The difference was immediate and very noticable.

As I said , I missed the 3 rd period so I cannot comment, but I would be interested to know how the rest of thegame went and if any of you guys agree......Bill

Nyisles82 said...

Okposo on Tuesday!!

I'd love to see him, Tamby & Neilsen together again...

Anonymous said...

Well, if the Isles do not get Stamkos then they should be able to grab one of those D-men to QB the PP. If the can also grab Liles then that would free up Gervais as trade bait in a package for a top line scoring forward. That would really solidify the defense for a few years to come.

What do you think about making a run at Svatos who is a RFA this year?....Bill

Candyman said...

The Isles really need an offensive captain. Witt is a fine player, but they need a forward who can score goals and who will lead by example. Comeau could be the future captain of the Isles after Guerin's tenure is up. The Isles need to drive hard after this Stamkos kid--I hear he is also the type of player a franchise can build around. If we don't end up with the first overall pick, Snow should do everything to trade up, possibly sacrificing the Isles surplus of second rounders.

shinkdew said...

Why would any team trade the #1 pick of this year's draft and pass on Stamkos?

Nyisles82 said...

Because a team like LA might be worried about future salary cap issues. Doubtful, but teams have traded down before. Especially if they don't NEED a forward, and would rather go with dmen. Give our 1st pick w/ a number of 2nd rounders for the 1st overall...should at least be entertained, right?

Either way, if we don't get Stamkos this year we need one of those d-men..badly.

If we can hold on one more year to re-build, lets tank in 08-09, and bet on Tavares.

Anonymous said...

No team is passing on Stamkos. If we don't win the powerball drawing we will not get him.

Great teams are built from the goal outward. So, getting a true stud D man is not really so bad.
Potvin was the cornerstone of the Isles dynasty.
The Devils built around Stevens and later Neidermeyer.
Detroit has won because of Lindstrom's great play.

If one of the Dmen in this draft is anywhere close to those players then it will be a great pick up and free up money to sign a UFA or RFA.

Having checked over both UFA and RFA lists, it is my opinion that Snow has to seriously think about going the RFA route. I know that it goes against the NHL old boys club to raid another teams RFA but the Isles are in desperate shape and need to do some creative thinking here.

Let's face it, the old way of building a team here just has not worked. It's time to step up and go for the gold.

I am seeing more and more web reports that a rift is developing between Snow and Nolan over the youth vs vets situation.

Snow really needs to take charge here and let Nolan know who the boss is. Once again, Nolan appears to be undermining his GM. I can only hope that the Wangster is smart enough to see what is going on here and back his GM.

Nolan's true colors are starting to show now that the team has fallen off the map. He is and always will be a "me first" coach.

He is not the right fit for next years youth movement team. I can only hope that Wang sees this and makes a move to either lay down the law to Nolan or let him go.

A team of underacheiving vets in Toronto would be the ideal setting for the great motivator. Perhaps we could get a draft pick for him....Bill

shinkdew said...

Colliton was recalled. Jackman and Walter were sent back to Bridgeport.

I think they should wait another year to sign RFAs, I'd rather not lose next year's first round pick. With our luck, the Islanders would finish in the bottom 5, and win the lottery, but not be able to pick Tavares.

Candyman said...

Like nyisles said, a team like LA or TB might prefer to take a defenseman...you never know why a team will behave the way it does...in 2000 Heatley was the obvious choice but a string of deals led the Isles to taking DiPietro (I know this was Mad Mike but still it's possible)...and this notion should be entertained...

Anonymous said...

Justin, NYISLES If you are Dean Lombardi are you really going to give up a franchise player like Stamkos? Let's try to think with our heads and not our hearts.

Lombardi is a pretty savvy hockey mind who knows the value of a player of Stamkos' ability to put fannies in the seats. He is not giving that up for any amount of picks. The Kings have not had a real marquee player since Gretsky left. They are not trading this one away.

We could still win the lottery, though..........Bill

Candyman said...

All I'm saying is there's no harm in offering up a good amount to move up. If a team could only move down 1 pick and pick up say a 1st rounder, 2 2nd rounders, Gervais and Tambellini they might be tempted.

shinkdew said...

That seems like a very steep price to move up one pick.

If the Islanders have the #2 pick, I have no problem with them staying there and picking Doughty. It's not like they are stocked with quality prospects at defense.

shinkdew said...

MacDonald was called up to back up Dubie. DiPietro is out with an injury is having an MRI on his hip.

Anonymous said...

It looks as if Snow has finally awakened from his slumber. My guess is the DP will have a "season ending" injury and will not play another game. This tells me that Snow has decided to tank the rest of the games in order to make a run at Stamkos.

Witt will not return. Gervais will not play again if the Isles have any brains at all. Why risk the kids future for a couple of meaningless games. He can rest his concussion all summer and not have to worry about re injuring himself.
If they force Gervais back into the line up then the medical staff should be fired.

I doubt if Tank will return and Hilbert really doesn't matter even if he does.

This is the Islanders way of tanking the season without any repercussions from the NHL.

It also gives Snow 9 games to evaluate the B'Port talent and see just who fits into next years plans and who doesn't.

Of course, knowing the Islanders, DP will probably play the next game. Maybe I am giving Snow too much credit?

What do you guys think?.....Bill

Nyisles82 said...

Bill- didn't even think of it that way, but I think you're right.

Shut the guys who you know will play a key role in the next couple years down for the season, and let the impending FA's and kids see who wants it more. And do it all without making it seem like you're intentionally losing.

I honestly hope they don't win another game this year. I feel weird saying it, but what is the use? Pad the stats?

While I'm excited about the kids, I have no idea why Walter was sent back down. He played quite well recently, and (correct me if I've forgotten one) scored the last NYI PP goal! Maybe Snowlang feels bad for Bridgeport and agrees not to take ALL their players. (Seriously though...do THEY have anyone they can call up??)

Candyman said...

Bill I agree with you and DP should not suit up again for the rest of the year. He's probably been hurt since the all-star game and I wouldn't mind seeing the Isles stumble their way toward Stamkos.

shinkdew said...

Walter was sent back because Bridgeport is still in the playoff hunt. The team is pretty depleted with all of the call ups and Walter is more talented than Colliton. There is no sense keeping him up with the Islanders playing 5 minutes a game, when he can be in Bridgeport helping them make the playoffs.

The ideal situation for the Islanders would be to finish in the lottery, and have Bridgeport make the playoffs so all the kids get some playoff experience.

Anonymous said...

As per TSN DP's season is over. He will have hip surgery.

Who called it? LOL LOL....Bill

Candyman said...

DP's workload must be reduced next season. Let me be the first to say that the Isles will have a boat load of money to spend this spring and they better spend it on a capable backup. Dubie is nice for the spot start here and there, but I think the Isles can do a lot better.

Anonymous said...

Justin, I disagree about Dubie. I think he should be rewarded witha 2 year deal. He played great last night and has always answered the call.
Dubie and DP have both been misused by Nolan, who seems to be his true colors as the season crumbles around him.

I thought Colliton was one of the better players out there last night. It is a shame that the Isles seem to have an abundance of third line young players who all seem to be NHL ready.

Snow should be able to move a few of them in a package for a puck mover.

As of right now, what's the Isles 2008 draft status? They have 1 first rounder and at least 2 second rounders as far as I know.
Is that it?.......Bill

Candyman said...

Do you honestly think Dubie can handle 20-25 starts a season? I certainly do not. He's good for the spot start and is probably best as a 3rd string goalie. The Isles need a 1A goalie that can handle big minutes and pressure DP into maintaining solid play over the course of the season. It's not like we wont have the money to spend.

Anonymous said...

I think that Dubie can play 18-20 games per season. He has a lot of factors in his favor.

1. He is a bargin at his price.
2. His team mates seem to have confidence in him.
3. He has proved he can handle the pressure.
4. He's popular with the fans.
5.His save % is 906and his GAA is under 3. How many other backups have these numbers?

IF you don't want Dubie, then name who you think is better suited?
I really don't see anyone out there that is any upgrade....Bill

Nyisles82 said...

Dubie should get resigned.

He's shown he can handle pressure, and shake off rust quickly. Who else should we replace him with?

Also, I don't think DP needs someone to pressure him. I may be wrong, but he seems to be the type of guy who puts more pressure on himself than anyone else can.

I'd argue no one is more upset about how this season has gone (except for us regulars, of course) than DP on the team. He's the only one I've seen show emotion. Comrie & Witt come in second...but when was the last time you saw Guerin, Satan, Tank, Vasicek etc. slam a stick in frustration, get visibly angry with the play of teammates, start a real scrum, or yell back at the refs?

Comrie might over-stick handle, but thats probably because he's the only one who CAN score, and feels he needs to. Take some pressure off him by giving him scoring support, and with his intensity and competitiveness...I predict a lot more goals.

That type of passion, grit, & character is what I expected from this team...people who HATE to lose, and will do anything to win. To me a lot of the guys out there seem just fine collecting paychecks and going home.

Candyman said...

"His save % is 906and his GAA is under 3. How many other backups have these numbers?"

Hmmmm I had a feeling it was quite a few so I did some research....

Here are the leaders in goaltenders who were not projected to be the team's starter this season...aka stats for teams' #2 depth goalie....

Mathieu Garon - 26 wins, 2.66 GAA, .913 %
Chris Osgood - 25, 2.07, .916
Dan Ellis - 19, 2.48, .917
Ty Conklin - 18, 2.46, .924
Peter Budaj - 16, 2.54, .905
Carey Price - 17, 2.69, .915
Mike Smith - 15, 2.44, .907
Alex Auld - 12, 2.71, .906
Antero Nittymaki - 11, 2.91, .907
Frederik Norrena - 9, 2.91, .900
Josh Harding - 11, 2.85, .910
Dany Sabourin - 10, 2.75, .904
Mikael Tellqvist - 8, 2.59, .911
Brent Johnson - 7, 2.67, .908
Craig Anderson - 6, 2.17, .936
Jonas Hiller - 7, 2.16, .920
Wade Dubielwicz - 6, 2.91, .906
Stephen Valliquette - 5, 2.07, .916
Kevin Weeks - 2, 2.63, .906

So there you have it. Out of these 19 #2 goalies, Dubie is tied for the worst GAA among them and has one of the lowest save percentages among them. All of this, and Dubie hasn't even been tested to handle a 1A NHL goaltender job.

Candyman said...

Nyisles and Bill...I get what you are saying about Dubie and your not alone in your opinions among many Isles fans...

Personally as a goaltender, and now a goaltending coach, I think Dubie will be easily solved the longer he is around. He is very prone to giving up the long goal and often loses his footing on scrambles in front (remember NJ's tying goal with 0.2 seconds left last season when Dubie tripped over his own feet?) He is vulnerable up high and has more trouble than most in picking up shots through screens (mostly b/c he is so little).

I just don't see him as the type of goaltender that can handle in the vicinity of 20 games.

Anonymous said...

Justin, Many of those guys are already signed for next year. Secondly, only two have played less games than Dubie. Six games are not exactly a true test of a goaltenders worth, are they?
How many of them went a month or more without playing?

How many are UFA's?

Who do you consider an upgrade?

And most of all, how many are playing for better teams?
Would you really compare Osgood's Wings with Dubie's Islanders?s

Let's be real here, the team that is playing in front of you has a great deal to do with both GAA and
save percentage. I saw the Isles take 50 + shots in a few games this year and not one of them was dangerous.

The Islanders problem is scoring not goaltending.

Let's see what numbers Dubie has at the end of the year now that he will be playing more than once every six weeks. And remember he is plaing with the B'Port Islanders
not The Wings or the Ducks....Bill

Anonymous said...

DP's save percentage is .902 which is the worst among any goalie on your list.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the difference between a .906 and a
.910 is 4 goals allowed per 1000 shots. Not really a huge difference.

My guess is that Snow will reward Dubie with a new deal if he keeps close to these numbers for the next 8 games.

I alway thought that a 3.00 GAA and a .900 save % were the benchmarks for quality goalies.

Has that changed?....Bill

Candyman said...

Bill...your right about those goalies probably getting more time than Dubie has...and many of them are playing for superior teams...I was just making a point that Dubie's stats are far from impressive...a 3.00 GAA used to be the standard in the 1980's. But somewhere during the Hasek era, the standard lowered to more around 2.50. If you look at the list of qualified goaltenders (on pace to play at least 27 games), only 6 out of 44 have a GAA greater than 3.00. I would say the median/average is about 2.50 And yes DP's save percentage is horrible as well at .902. But we all know what DP can do. I'm just not so sure we know what Dubie can do. But these are the types of things we tend to argue about during a lost season. ;-)

Nyisles82 said...

If you all read Logan's blog (not the comments, for your own sanity!), you'll see Nolan is adamant against tanking the season. Great, he's fine with getting the 18th pick instead of the 3rd pick?

And, he's now putting the players through grueling practices based on their perceived lack of effort against TO.

What, now is the time to get upset about the effort? What about in December? What about in February? Satan, Guerin, Tank etc have been coasting for the last few months. They were notably bad in the TO game, but please, what else is left to play for?

Let the kids play, and don't now get on the veterans who YOU hung out to dry by making bad coaching decisions all year, Ted. Accept some of the blame yourself- the lack of effort you see now is not all the player's fault..how come we never heard about 'bag skates' when we were actually fighting for a playoff spot?

I recall an interview last year with Yashin in which he attributed some of his turnaround year (before the injury, obviously) to the extra rest and recovery time Nolan was giving the players. I suspect he did something similar this year.

However, I have to wonder whether some of the injuries and lack of effort have to do with this approach as well. These guys are all supreme athletes, and their bodies can handle a lot of physical stress. Letting them coast & rest during the season probably makes it hard to switch on the intensity during games, and when they do, their muscles aren't used to it- resulting in injuries. Can anyone comment after seeing an Isles practice?

In my previous athletic life, our team always lived on the idea of practicing at "game speed", but maintaining a lot of rest. If you practice slow, you'll play slow. If you practice fast & with intensity, you will do the same. There is a big difference between putting guys through bag skates and running high-intensity workouts. You can still rest your guys (helping the older vets, a la Yashin), while ensuring the team is ready to come out flying.... if you practice at game speed.

Oh well, just another problem I have with the coaching philosophy on this team...

Nyisles....you are 100% right on the money...his vets have been coasting all season...Tank, Guerin, Comrie, Vasicek, etc. have all had prolonged periods of lazy play, yet now he thinks its unacceptable to take a game off? What about the Leafs game during the 1st week of the season? Remember the one where we got blown out and left Dubie to hang out to dry.....Nolan is a manipulator and a boarderline liar....he says he didn't know DP was injured...HAHHAHA good one Ted....

Will the real Nolan type players please stand up?

How's my non Nolan type player Robert Nilsson doing?

63 games 10 goals 27 assists +8

It sticks in my craw that we gave up on him. I have the same feeling that we will repeat the mistake with Tambellini.

Dump Nolan. Hire Trottier.....Bill
