ISLES 2 RANGERS 1

By: Bill (Guest Columnist)

Boy, I like the look of that. Outstanding TEAM effort tonight. This was the best game the Isles have played all year. Some thoughts:

Why can't DP play Lundqvist or Broduer every night? If he played with the focus that he brings to these games he would be unbeatable.

Snow needs to sign Vasicek to a long term deal on Jan 1 st.

Hunter was everywhere in the offensive zone. So was Satan.

Witt took Jagr out of the game completely. He and Martinek were great in the corners and in front of the net.

The Rangers really miss Straka. They are a different team with him in there.

Not to beat a dead horse, but did you guys count the times Berard missed the net on the PP? Bring back MAB.

Campoli is not the answer on the point. When we had a 2-0 lead and were on the PP we could have buried them right there. Instead we give up a shortie and let them right back in the game.

The PP needs to work on the 5 on 3.
Winning teams convert those chances.

Simon played his best game of the year. Hopefully, he is rounding into game form.

That little punk Avery tried to land on DP again. DP slugged him and got called. The refs blew that call. It is obvious that Avery attempts to injure the opposing goaltender whenever he can.
Good for DP. I guess he remembers last year all too well.

Enough of the "Ranger Hangover." Let's knuckle down and take two from the Canadians......Bill

My thoughts: I was outraged when Howie Rose and Billy Jaffe criticized DP for punching Avery, calling it an unnecessary retaliation. They seemingly failed to remember that Avery had previously taken shots at DP in the head, contributing to his late season concussions last year.

While I agree that MAB should be back on the team (esepcially the PP), I disagree that he will better at preventing short-handed chances against.

Nice hit by Berard on Drury by the way.

You guys are lucky you didn't have to watch the MSG clowns. They made it sound like Avery got blasted from behind, and DP was throwing haymakers. I almost had to shut it off. Then when Comrie grazed Lundqvist later in the game, they made it sound like Comrie ran him through the end boards.

Skindew, yep, totally agree. I hate when the Isles get the home announcers from teams I dislike. I almost consider watching it muted...

I do give them credit when Bergie got that boarding penalty...it was a real bad call, and they credited the fans for influencing the refs. Totally accurate- Bergie hit the Ranger player hip on hip, but the weakling couldn't stand upright, and crashed headfirst into the boards. Thankfully, no goal on that bad call...

Agree with both of you. I watched Rags in 60 and the announcers were rather biased last night. My favorite call by Sam Rosen was on Bergie's quick snap show that Lunqvist gloved even though it was probably heading 2 feet wide. Rosen was like "wow what a glove save by Lundqvist ohhhh that was labeled for the corner but there was Lunqvist to flash the leather."

I somethimes watch the Ranger-Islander games on MSG just to get the other point of view.
I can barely stand to listen to Micheletti anymore. He continually repeats himself.

If I hear him say:
"He just keeps (or kept) going."
I want to kick the TV.

Some one should keep track of how many times a game he repeats that.
He has become unlistenable.

I do like Sam Rosen though. I think you get about an 80% honest call from him.....Bill

That was a stinker. Am I the only one that thought the reffing was terrible? The first three calls were really bad.

Hope everyone has a happy and safe holiday.

Thanksgiving Turkey
Montreal 4 - Isles 1

A couple of things were very apparent tonight:

First, you can't win them all. This was one of those nights where everything went against the Islanders. Butch Goring put it best. Sometimes it just doesn't go your way.

Second, the Isles cannot handle a very quick team. Montreal ate them up with short, quick passes and rapid movement in the offensive zone.
The Islander game plan relies on forechecking and banging the D until they give up the puck. Montreal easily countered that by fast breakout passes that caught the Islander forwards in deep.
Nolan has to adapt his plan to counter faster teams.

Montreal obviously scouted DP and cut off his passing lanes very effectivly. Everytime he looked to pass up the boards there was a Montreal player right in position to intercept the pass.

The PP sucks without MAB. Teddy boy needs to wake up and get that shot back into the game. Berard has been totally ineffective witout the threat of MAB's blast.
Berard misses the net as much as MAB. You just notice when MAB misses more because his shot is so hyped.

Campoli should not be playing on the first PP unit. He may get there, but he is not ready yet.

Jackman is a waste. He is taking a valuable roster spot that should be used to play MAB or to bring up Walter.

Comrie is way too fancy for his own good. I hope that this is not the case, but he reminds me a bit of Yashin, who always seemed to score when we were down by five or six. He needs to start scoring meaningful goals.

Snow and Nolan should not get lulled into beleiving that this team can win. I think that this fast start has them thinking that this roster is set. I hope not, because there are plenty of holes to be filled here. Snow, especially, should not remain complacent. We need more offensive weapons and we cannot stand pat.

Friday's game should see DP get the start. He always plays well in front of his hometown. Then come back with Dubie on Sat. and give him a start. He needs to stay sharp and DP could use a day off.

My guess is that that turkey is not gonna taste as good as it might have tomorrow in the Islander homes. They need to shake it off and come out strong against the Bruins. The should be able to take 3 or 4 points from Boston......Bill

And Andy Hilbert is still 0 for the season......Bill

Bill - I agree with you about Comrie. I'm tired of seeing that stupid toe drag move, JUST SHOOT THE PUCK. I don't think Snow thinks this team is set. The PP is in disarray. I actually think the second unit is better than the first. For whatever reason, they are having trouble making passes.

Sillinger is killing that line. If you watch the 1st, 2nd and 4th lines, the first two guys get in the corners and work the boards and try to cycle. The third forward is usually 10-15 ft away in the slot looking for a shot or getting open for a pass. The 3rd line goes out there and Hunter and Hilbert are working the boards and trying to cycle, and Sillinger is at the blue line watching them. They are pretty much shorthanded. When either of them get the puck, they either have to try to get out front and get a shot themselves, or chip it back behind the net. I honestly think if Park was on that line, they'd be more effective. I wouldn't mind them calling up Walter and sitting Silliger for a couple games. I think Hilbert-Walter-Hunter could be a pretty good line.
