UPDATE; I'm not too sure I liked what Garth Snow chose to do yesterday. He promised fans that he would take the best available player, but he clearly went back on his word. If either Filatov or Wilson turn out to be big time talents and Bailey becomes the next Ryan O'Marra, then it's over. It just isn't meant to be for us Isles fans. The Isles did replenish their farm system and hopefully that will pay its dividends sometime before 2015. July 1st is on its way. I'm not sure if that's a day to look for or not, but sometime in mid July we will have a better idea of what kind of team we will see out there for the 2008-2009 season. Thoughts?

Who will the Isles choose? Will they grab the speedy Russian forward Flitiov at the 5 spot if he's still available. Or will they perhaps grab Pietrangelo if he's still available when the Isles make their pick. Some believe the Isles might agree to drop a few spots in this year's draft in an attempt to grab some extra players, while allowing another team to move up. The events that unfold tonight will play a huge role in how the Isles will look over next 5 years. Let's see what happens.

I thought that as well. I want Filatov.
My thoughts are this July is going to much like last July. A couple of players will be signed and that's about it. I don't see any top tier free agents signing unless they offer crazy money, which I don't think Snow will do.
I'm okay with what Snow did. He got a solid playmaking center and looks to have made very good selections with the extra picks. It's going to take a couple of years to undo the last 10 years of mismanagement.
Well my own considered opinion is that Snow did a great job and really hit one out of the park. Getting nine of the top 100 players in the world is outstanding.
As for Snow lying.....so what. Should he have broadcast his intentions to the rest of the league and thereby never get value for his trades? C'Mon this is a big boys business. Let's realize that.
I see Snow getting two (one forward and one D man) in July. They with both be young and sign long term deals (4 or 5 years).
I will be very surprised if Snow comes up empty on this. It is all part of the master plan to have the team mature when yesterdays draftees are NHL ready.

This really can pan out in two ways. The first way (evil way) is if Filatov becomes a superstar a la Kovalchuk and the Isles missed their opportunity to grab a player to build their team around. It's happened before. In previous first rounds, the Isles have passed on Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, Martin Brodeur, and more recently Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza. But, the Isles did gamble here and get a ton of promising young prospects. Being that it's so hard to predict how players will develop (see the careers of Kevin Chevledayoff, Alexander Daigle, and Patrick Stefan), sometimes it's better to go with quantity over quality, especially since the quality is so hard to predict.
Bill, my only problem here with Snow "lying" is that every time the Isles are primed to make a big pick they decide to get all cutesy. (See drafts 2000-2001 where the Isles gave up Chara, Luongo, Heatley, & Spezza for Yashin, Parrish, Kvasha, & DP). For once, I was hoping he would go with the more surefire pick.
